A study in S4C
Following Saturday’s protest over S4C’s (troubled) future, it’s interesting to see some rather positive results of a study on the channel’s impact in Wales.
The key points of the study, carried out by DTZ and the Welsh Economic Research Unit, are as follows:
- The channel is worth about £90m a year to Wales through employment of its staff, outsourcing to other media professionals and certain knock on effects.
- It supported 2, 111 jobs in 2010.
- £101.65m of its £104.22m income in 2010 came from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, which now hopes to relinquish this responsibility.
- S4C has also had a less tangible, but significant cultural role in Wales, by promoting the national language and boosting the country’s profile.
